If we say we know God and and we are known of God then why do we stumble still in the darkness of our troubles?

Just to saying if we really do know God and spend time with him then why don't we have victory over the sins in our lives that are keeping us away from him? Why do we allow the carnal self of our mind and heart control us instead of the will of God? How come it is so difficult?
