My laptop screen wont turn on?

I turned my computer off like normal and when i tried to turn it back on the screen is pitch black. i have examined the screen to see if it had cracked and it hasnt. upon closer examination, i can see my desktop background behind darkness so it is there but there is no light to it. i plugged it into my tele and it works fine. what can i do to fix this? it is an acer aspire 5943g
